Evolving Generations is a photo essay that documents how technology is gradually influencing young women on the tiny island of Bali, Indonesia. Culture is changing over time as more and more technology is introduced into everyday life.

The amount of work that Balinese women do in their life and the circumstances they have endured throughout history is nothing short of inspiring. In Bali, women’s roles are genuinely important to the community and culture as a whole. They have come a long way in finding their sense of place, but they are still expected to be mothers and are held responsible for maintaining family rituals. Most women take pride in these expectations; however, many are striving for more.

Rituals have been consistent throughout Bali's history, but the culture shifted with the arrival of technology in the early 2000’s. More women are breaking from these unique rituals and are reaching for new goals that – pre-technology – had not been attainable. Mothers are business owners and managers, women are staying out past midnight, and many of them are even entertainers. All of this would have given the family a bad name in the past. But because technology has reached this new generation, Balinese women feel more empowered to explore and follow new paths in life, though they still hold onto the cultural rituals and mystic beliefs of their homeland.
